ShareGate Protect archives SharePoint sites using Microsoft 365 Archive. Protect doesn't add its own archiving, so most of the behavior on this page comes from Microsoft.
To learn how to archive a workspace in Protect, see Archive workspaces in ShareGate Protect.
What gets archived
Protect archives the SharePoint site. When a site is archived, all of its content is archived with it, including document libraries, lists, permissions, and metadata.
Group-connected sites and Microsoft Teams
When you archive a site connected to a Microsoft 365 group or a Microsoft Teams team, only the site is archived. The group or team stays active.
For a team, this means:
Teams doesn't show that the team is archived.
Team members can still post and start conversations in the team.
Files stored in the team's SharePoint site are no longer available.
Private and shared channels
ShareGate Protect doesn't archive a team that has private or shared channels. The archive action fails for that team.
Unsupported site types
Microsoft doesn't support archiving for publishing sites, channel sites, and some older site templates. The archive action fails for these sites. For the full list of supported templates, see Microsoft's article Manage Microsoft 365 Archive.
More information
For details on how archiving works and the limitations Microsoft lists, see Microsoft's article Overview of Microsoft 365 Archive.
