Unable to preserve list version history when using insane mode

Updated this week

Symptom

You get the following warning while migrating in Insane mode:

Unable to preserve list version history when using insane mode. Version 8.0 will be version 7.0 at the destination. To preserve version history during migration, use normal mode instead of insane mode.

Details

The version history at the source might have a current version like X.0, but the migration cannot start at that number in insane mode. The version will reset to 1.0 at the destination.

When version history is not fully included, insane mode cannot maintain the original version numbering.

The numbering at the destination will always start at 1.0, regardless of the original version number.

How to fix it

If keeping the original version numbers is essential:

  1. Switch to normal mode for your migration.

  2. Include the full version history in your Copy options.

Note: We do not recommend extensively using Normal mode for migrations to Microsoft 365 to avoid throttling and other potential performance issues.
