Updated this week

Your Microsoft 365 SharePoint external sharing setting can impact your ability to use ShareGate's management and security features.

Index

Details

The SharePoint admin center has the organization-level option:

External sharing: Content can be shared with Anyone, New and existing guests, Existing guests, Only people in your organization.

This option can be set to prevent content from being shared externally.

If external sharing is not enabled, ShareGate cannot share content in any team or group.

Tip: From the admin center menu, click Policies > Sharing to display the option.

Impact on sensitivity tags

The following message will appear in the Sensitivity tags section of your Policies to alert you:

You need to lower the external sharing setting at the organization-level to use a specific sensitivity tag.

When you create or edit a sensitivity tag, the External sharing security setting will be unavailable. The message, Your tenant's settings has made this option unavailable, will appear to remind you.

Impact on team and group security settings

The team and group security settings for external sharing cannot be modified. If you attempt to update the setting, one of the following messages will appear to alert you:

External sharing setting couldn't be changed. Your organization-level external sharing setting has made this setting unavailable because it is more restrictive.

Your tenant's settings have made this option unavailable.

Impact on external sharing features

The external sharing and guest access management features will not include external sharing reviews. When you automate the External sharing review policy, the following message will appear to alert you:

The external sharing setting in your Microsoft 365 admin center doesn't allow sharing links. We'll only automate guest reviews.

For more information on the impact of Microsoft settings on external sharing features, see Microsoft doesn't allow sharing links or guests.

Solution

Update your Microsoft external sharing setting to allow people outside of your organization. For complete details on how-to, consult the Microsoft article Manage sharing settings: Change the organization-level external sharing setting.

The External sharing setting must be: Content can be shared with Anyone.

You can use ShareGate's features to manage guest access and secure your environment when this update is made.
