Symptoms

When attempting to copy a document, ShareGate Migrate displays the following error:

Draft versions are not enabled on your list and only draft versions are available for copy.

Error code

  • DA-015-028

Details

When copying documents, ShareGate Migrate will preserve the version history as it is at the source, but it will also respect the settings of the destination library.

If the destination library only allows the creation of major (published) versions, ShareGate Migrate will only copy the major versions from the source and will not copy the minor (draft) versions. When the source only has draft versions available, then ShareGate Migrate has nothing to copy and this error occurs.

Solution

There are 3 possible solutions to this issue:

Use ShareGate

  • From the Explorer, drill down and select the library you want to update. In the quick actions menu on the right, scroll to Versioning. Toggle on Versioning and Minor versions. The changes will apply immediately so you can redo your migration.

From SharePoint

  • Make sure you have at least one major (published) version of each document at the source.

  • Set the destination library to allow draft versions. This can be done by going into the destination library settings and changing the version settings. For more information, see the Microsoft article Enable and configure versioning for a list or library.
