Edge runtime installation failed (Internet Explorer deprecation)

Symptoms

You connect with browser authentication or update the app and get one of the following error messages:

  • Edge runtime installation failed.

  • Installation of the Edge runtime failed.

Details

Since Microsoft dropped support for Internet Explorer, they will no longer update it with security patches. ShareGate Migrate uses Microsoft's Edge runtime for browser authentication as of version 17.1 to avoid data vulnerability and security issues.

ShareGate Migrate will look for Edge runtime on your machine. If it is not detected, it will download a bootstrapper from Microsoft that will install and keep Edge runtime up to date.

If Edge runtime is not up to date or if you do not have it on your system, ShareGate Migrate will not be able to connect to your environment with browser authentication.

The Edge bootstrapper installation can fail if you have network or system restrictions.

Note: Edge runtime is not the same as the Edge browser. For browser authentication, Microsoft Edge WebView2 is used to embed web technologies into ShareGate Migrate. For more information, see the Microsoft article Introduction to Microsoft Edge WebView2.

Solution

If you get these error messages, you can:

  • Contact your IT admin to see if they can lift the network restrictions that block the Edge runtime bootstrapper.

  • Download and run the Evergreen Standalone Installer that works for your system on the Microsoft Webview2 page.
