How-to
Open the team and group details
Select Manage from the sidebar.
Choose between your tenant's Teams or All Groups.
Search for the team or group.
Use the Search by team/group or owners field or Filters.
Select the team or group.
The Membership lists for Owners, Members, and Guests, are displayed in the Overview tab of the team and group details.
Add an Owner, Member, or Guest
Click Add next to the group (Owners, Members, Guests).
Start to type the user's name in the search field.
Select the user you want to add.
Note: Guests can only be added or removed. To add a guest, the team or group must have the Guests allowed security setting.
Promote/demote an Owner or Member
Hover over the user you want to edit.
Click the Three dots button.
Select Assign as owner or Assign as member depending on the group your user is currently assigned to.
Add an Owner to the Do not Disturb list
Hover over the user you want to edit.
Click the Three dots button.
Select Put on Do not Disturb list.
Follow the same steps to Remove from Do not Disturb list.
Remove an Owner or Member
Hover over the user you want to edit.
Click the Three dots button.
Select Remove from team or Remove from group.
In the pop-up, click Remove.
You cannot remove an owner when there is only 1. Doing so would create an orphaned team or group.
Tip: It's best practice to have at least 2 owners for each team and group. That way there's always someone available to receive notifications and take action on your policies.
Remove a Guest
Guests can only be added or removed. To have guests, the team or group must first have the Guests allowed security setting.
Hover over the user you want to remove from the Guests section.
Click Close.
Resolve orphaned teams and groups
To add an owner to an orphaned team or group, see Orphaned teams and groups.
Unlicensed or disabled owners and members
Disabled accounts (i.e. accounts blocked in the Microsoft 365 admin center) or accounts without a license are still visible in the team and group details Membership lists. These owners and members are marked as Deactivated or Unlicensed.
ShareGate Management excludes disabled accounts and accounts without a license from the owners count, which can impact the field OwnersCount
in the Teams and groups report. MembersCount
shows all members, regardless of account status.
