Feature retirement: Purpose and sensitivity tags for provisioning
Feature retirement: Purpose and sensitivity tags for provisioning
Updated this week

On 28 May 2024, ShareGate retired all provisioning settings related to purpose and sensitivity tags. All users were migrated to a new ShareGate Provisioning experience that uses Microsoft's native external sharing and guest access levels rather than purpose and sensitivity tags. Purpose and sensitivity tags remain unchanged for all other ShareGate features.

What does this mean?

  • When creating or modifying a team creation template, the Apply a sensitivity tag and Apply a purpose tag toggles in the Policies section are removed.

    • These settings are replaced with the option to set a default external sharing and guest access level for provisioned teams.

  • For existing templates that used a sensitivity tag to define an external sharing and guest access level, ShareGate's chatbot will ask provisioned team owners to select a new sensitivity tag.

  • For existing templates that used a purpose tag to define an inactivity threshold, ShareGate's chatbot will ask provisioned team owners to select a new purpose tag.

  • There are no perceptible changes for your end users.

Note: ShareGate never bypasses tenant-level settings. If your tenant's Microsoft 365 configurations restrict certain external sharing and guest access levels, you won't be able to assign those settings to provisioning templates.
