Promote options
Updated this week

Customize your options when promoting subsites.

Index

How-to

Follow steps (1) to (7) in the walkthrough to get to the Options screen. Here you can make changes to your site collection(s) under the New site options.

Note: When promoting multiple subsites, you can expand them in the list to modify their individual options.

Site name and address (URL)

Modify the fields Site name and Site address (URL) to change the name and URL of your new site collection (the name and URL of the original site will remain unchanged if you don't update this information).

Site template

Use the dropdown menu to change the site template of the new site collection.

Note: When promoting a subsite with a Communication site template, your classic home page will be used and the publishing feature cannot be activated in the new site collection. You may have to manually create a new home page and adjust some elements to take full advantage of the modern template.

Administrators

You can decide to add or remove administrators using the Microsoft 365 group owners field. Note that you must have at least one valid administrator and can add as many as SharePoint allows you to.

Note: When promoting with the modern Team site template (Microsoft 365 Group) the default administrator list will include administrators from the parent site collection and the site owners of the subsite.

Original subsite

Select what you want to do with the original subsite.

  • Keep original subsite as is - Promote the subsite as a new site collection, and keep the original.

  • Delete the subsite once it's been successfully promoted - Promote the subsite as a new site collection and delete the original subsite after it's been copied. If any error exists in the subsite or if the Promote job is canceled, the delete operation will not occur.
