Updated this week

ShareGate Migrate carries your associated permissions during migration and will attempt to preserve their integrity from the source to the destination whenever possible.

By default, we try to preserve the permissions as they are on your items.

Preserving inherited permissions

If items have inherited permissions at the source, we will let them inherit the permissions from the list or library at the destination. If the parent list or library does not have the same permissions at the source and the destination, the migrated items will not have the same permissions at the source and the destination.

To preserve your inherited permissions, you can use one of the following solutions:

Use Copy structure and content

You can use Copy structure and content to copy lists and libraries from a source environment to a destination environment while maintaining inheritance.

Requirements

  1. The list or library has custom permissions or broken inheritance at the source. This ensures that items in the list or library will not inherit the permissions from the destination site.

  2. At a minimum, the entire list or library is copied. For more information, see Copy structure and content - Lists and libraries.

Configure a destination object

You can configure a list or library with the correct permissions at the destination and migrate items to this list or library using Copy content only.

Requirements

  1. The destination list or library has the same custom permissions or broken inheritance as the source list or library. This ensures that items in the list or library will not inherit additional permissions from the destination.

  2. The items being migrated have inherited permissions. This ensures that the items inherit permissions from the destination list or library.

Migrate a parent object first

You can migrate the parent folder, list, or library that contains the permissions to the destination first using Copy structure and content, then migrate items using Copy content only.

Requirements

  1. The list or library has custom permissions or broken inheritance at the source. This ensures that items in the list or library will not inherit the permissions from the destination site.

  2. The general copy option List content is unchecked during the Copy structure and content migration. This ensures that the list or library is migrated without items.
