Copying workflows makes them available at the destination site.

Review the general information section of this article to ensure that the type of workflow you want to copy is supported.

Prerequisites

Note: Site collection admin permissions are required even if you have higher admin privileges like SharePoint admin or global admin permissions. For more information, see Microsoft administrative permissions.

General information

  • The only supported workflows are the built-in SharePoint workflows and those created with SharePoint Designer.

  • An add-on for Nintex workflow support is available. Before beginning, consult the article Copy Nintex Workflows to ensure your specific migration is supported.

  • You can copy reusable workflows and site workflows.

  • List workflows and content type workflows are copied when you copy their associated list or content type.

  • Your workflows are automatically deactivated during the migration and reactivated when the migration is completed.

  • SharePoint 2013 (or newer) workflows migrated to 2013, 2016, 2019, and Microsoft 365 will work at your destination.

Limitations

  • Globally Resuable Workflows are not supported.

  • SharePoint 2010 workflows have been retired and are not supported in Microsoft 365. For information, see the Microsoft article Overview of workflows.

  • Visual Studio custom workflows, workflow actions, and workflow templates are not currently supported.

How-to

  1. Select Copy from the menu.

  2. Select Copy structure and content.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Select your source.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Click Connect.

  7. Select your destination.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Select Workflows from the list of Site objects.

  10. Select the workflow(s) you want to copy from the source.

  11. Click Optionson the top right if you want to apply specific parameters.

  12. Drag and drop it into the destination, or click Start copy on the bottom-right corner.

The migration report will show any successes, warnings, or errors. For more information, see Migration report.
