How can a global admin grant consent to the Azure ShareGate migration tool app for all users?
Updated this week

Global administrators can consent to the Azure ShareGate migration app within ShareGate Migrate or through Microsoft. You can change this option anytime in ShareGate Migrate's security settings.

For information on the benefits of the Azure ShareGate migration app, see What is the Azure ShareGate migration app?

Note: The Azure ShareGate migration tool app requires consent from a global administrator. If your account is not a global administrator, you can request that a global admin consents. The Azure ShareGate migration tool app is unsupported in GCC or GCC High environments. If a global admin previously consented to the app and you want to know why re-consent is needed, see Why does a global admin need to re-consent the Azure ShareGate migration app?

Consent through Microsoft

Consenting through Microsoft is a third-party process that does not affect user association within ShareGate Migrate.

Any tasks completed are associated with the user account connected to the environment in ShareGate Migrate.

To consent through Microsoft, follow these steps:

  1. A global admin must use this link to the Microsoft sign-in page.

  2. Sign in with his global admin credentials.

  3. After signing in, the Permissions requested page will show more details on the consent permissions.

  4. Click Accept.

Consent through ShareGate Migrate

Consenting through ShareGate Migrate requires that the user disconnects and reconnects to their environment. This ensures that completed tasks are not done under the global administrator's account.

  1. Disconnect from your environment in ShareGate Migrate.

  2. Ask a global administrator to log in to your environment using their credentials.

  3. Follow the consent process once prompted.

  4. Once done, disconnect from the environment and connect again using your username and password. This ensures you are not running tasks with the global administrator's account.

Consent to use Copy mailboxes through ShareGate Migrate

Copy mailboxes uses a different version of the Azure ShareGate migration tool app that requires consent to a few additional application permissions. You must consent when you connect your tenant in Copy mailboxes for the first time. Copy mailboxes require global admin permissions.

Note: An add-on to your ShareGate subscription is required to use Copy mailboxes. To upgrade your subscription, see Upgrade or renew your subscription.

Troubleshooting

If the app was consented and the change is not reflected in ShareGate Migrate, try reconnecting your tenant in Explorer.

If the reconnection does not work and you connect with Browser authentication, you can try turning Single sign-on (SSO) off, as it can prevent ShareGate Migrate from confirming consent was granted in some cases.

Copy mailboxes

If you have issues with app consent when using Copy mailboxes, remove the Azure ShareGate migration tool app and use this link to the Microsoft sign-in page to consent to the Azure app for Copy mailboxes.

Remove consent

To remove consent of the Azure ShareGate migration app, see How do I remove the Azure ShareGate migration tool app?
